The 72.8-sq-km (17,989-acre) Donghu area is encased by Zhuhai Avenue, North Xianghai Road, North Airport Road, and Modaomen Waterway in the east of Doumen, covering the radius of Zhuhai Hezhou Hub Station. Its core area for urban development is a 4.95-sq-km (1,223-acre) peninsula surrounded by Shengli and Youyi rivers south of East Baijiao.

Though large-scale urban construction has not yet been initiated, the area is regarded as the most potential future center of Doumen as it includes Donghu New City, Jianfeng South Business Area, and Huxin New City. With estimated investment of 9 million yuan ($1 million), integrated global technical consultation and solution are sought for urban design of the core area.

Originally planned to be a financial island in Doumen, the peninsula would become a riverside new city with regional and functional headquarters, and central business and information district featuring finance, industry, and living.

Donghu area is a strategic node on the west extension of the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin and bridgehead on passages towards Doumen as it neighbors Hezhou Railway Station, borders Baiteng Lake area. The Xianghai Bridge, which is now under construction, will run through the area over the Modaomen Waterway.
