Jiuzhou Avenue set to start 3-year fast pass renovation

Updated: 2023-02-03

The fast pass renovation of the Qianshan Interchange-Xingye Expressway section of Jiuzhou Avenue will start construction on Feb 6 to increase traffic efficiency and improve travel conditions.

An east-west artery in Zhuhai, Jiuzhou Avenue is a major part of the strategic passage of the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link. With the city's rapid urban development, the capacity of Jiuzhou Avenue during rush hours is extremely saturated and several intersections along the road become gridlocked.

The 3.8-km (2.4-mile) fast pass renovation project starts from the Qianshan Interchange in the west and ends in Donglian Road in the east. It includes five major nodes, and their construction will be pushed forward one by one until the second half of 2025.

The Baishi Road node will be the first to begin construction this February, and is estimated to be completed in June 2024. It will feature a dual six-lane overpass that goes over Baishi Road, with dual four-lane ramps that will connect to Baishi Road on the ground.

The Yingbin Road node, to be completed in May 2024, will have a directional ramp road that runs from the west to the east. This will be reserved for the future construction of a south-north overpass on Yingbin Road.

At the Jiuzhou Avenue-Guihua Road intersection, two lanes going in both directions on North Guihua Road as well as a pedestrian overpass will be built by May 2025.

Construction of the No 3 Jianye Road node will last from September 2024 to April 2025. The current traffic lights at the No 3 Jianye Road-Jiuzhou Avenue intersection will be removed and a pedestrian overpass will be built.

The Xingye Express node will be the last one to begin construction in July 2023 and is estimated to be completed in September 2025. Six lanes going in both directions of the Xingye Express will go over Jiuzhou Avenue, while the dual four lanes of Jiuzhou Avenue will be renovated into tunnels. A pair of directional side roads will also be built in the north and west.

Temporary lanes will be opened on each side of Jiuzhou Avenue and North Guihua Road to maintain their current traffic capacity during the construction period.
