The groundbreaking ceremony of HC Semitek's micro LED wafer manufacturing and packaging testing base project was held in Jinwan District, Zhuhai, on July 31. With an investment of over 2 billion yuan ($279 million), it is expected to start production in the third quarter of 2024.

Upon operation, this project will establish itself as a globally leading research and production base for micro LED, effectively filling the gap in Zhuhai's new display industry.

The base serves as Phase I of HC Semitek's 5-billion-yuan ($697-million) micro LED high-end chip integration project, which is one of Zhuhai's key pillar industrial projects this year. Once in full production, its annual output value is capable of reaching 5 billion yuan.

The base will specialize in the production of micro LED wafers and pixel devices, with an annual production capacity of 58,800 micro LED wafers and 45 billion micro LED pixel devices. These products will mainly be intended for use in high-definition displays of both super large and super small sizes, AR/VR headsets, and wearable devices.

Micro LED is the leading next-generation display technology. It features high brightness, high contrast, high response speed, low power consumption, high reliability, and a long lifespan. Compared to other display technologies, it has significant advantages in image resolution, system endurance, distortion and bending design, and environmental adaptability. It is considered to be the "ultimate solution" in the display field.

Liu Rong, president of HC Semitek, said that the enterprise will accelerate the completion and implementation of this project with support from BOE Technology Group and Huafa Group, turning it into a globally leading R&D base for micro LED and an important platform for next-generation display technology. The project is also expected to attract more upstream and downstream enterprises to settle in Zhuhai and create a new display industry cluster.
