The Suzhou Chinese Orchestra should promote traditional Chinese music to the outside world, Sun Zhijun, deputy director of China's top publicity department, said on May 17.
Sun made the remark while exploring the Chinese orchestra's development in Suzhou New District.
The deputy director said that Suzhou orchestra boasts a favorable atmosphere for development and a world-class orchestra should be its ultimate aim.
He hoped that the orchestra will make a splash at the upcoming Modern Music Festival, one of the three important music festivals in China, held in Beijing on May 21.
The Suzhou Chinese Orchestra was founded on Dec 24, 2017. Its inaugural concert was held on Dec 25, 2017 at the Suzhou Culture and Arts Centre Grand under the baton of Pang Kapang, who is also the orchestra's artistic director.
The young Suzhou Chinese Orchestra has over 90 musicians from more than five countries and regions, including Chinese mainland, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Based on its influence in the music industry, the orchestra plans to organize festivals and forums on traditional Chinese music in Suzhou so as to make the city an iconic place where traditional music is composed, performed and explored.
