Gu Guanren, an outstanding composer, served as director and artistic director for Shanghai Chinese Orchestra and enjoys a special government allowance from China's State Council.
His main works include the pipa concerto Hua Mulan, which is about a legendary woman warrior from the Northern and Southern dynasties (420–589), the ensemble piece Spring, the orchestral concerto Eight Musical Instruments in Harmony, the erhu concerto Watching the Moon, and the guzheng concerto Peony Pavilion.
