Ten key shopping malls and supermarkets in Suzhou New District received over 1.49 million visitors, three times of last year's amount, and their sales revenue grew 286 percent year-on-year to 300 million yuan ($46.47 million) during the Spring Festival holiday, local media outlets reported.
In addition to extending their hours, the commercial units also offered a variety of activities and special deals to attract visitors, such as giving out red packets on the first day of Lunar New Year on Feb 12, inviting children to try their hands at sugar painting, and worshiping the God of Wealth on Feb 16.
Cinemas became the most popular recreational sites, as 11 cinemas across the district offered a total of 3,825 showings for 256,000 moviegoers from Feb 11 to 17, with the number of viewers growing 40.28 percent from 2019 and the gross box office increasing 52.95 percent from 2019 to 13 million yuan. The box office at three cinemas in the district also ranked among the top 10 in Suzhou.
