Beyond its iconic landscapes, Guilin is emerging as a key AI innovation hub in Guangxi, driven by its universities – a dynamic trend known as the "Guilin Phenomenon" in the region's higher education AI landscape.
Guilin's AI strength rests on solid foundations. As early as 2018, Guilin University of Electronic Technology launched Guangxi's first AI college, with over 60 percent of its undergraduate programs now related to AI.

Guangxi Normal University's AI discipline has earned global recognition, ranking among the world's top 201-300, a milestone for Guangxi's universities. These institutions build on Guilin's industrial heritage from mid-20th-century national defense development, which laid the groundwork in aerospace, electronics, and advanced manufacturing.
Each university carves a unique niche: Guilin University of Electronic Technology excels in electronic information, Guilin University of Technology focuses on AI applications in geology and mining, and Guilin Medical University specializes in smart healthcare.
Their efforts produce tangible outcomes: 17 billion yuan ($2.4 billion) in AI core industry output, four new regional smart manufacturing benchmarks, and 50 open AI application scenarios.
Collaboration amplifies impact. Established in 2025, the Guilin AI Industry Alliance links five local universities and 12 enterprises, including Huawei.

Backed by the newly approved Guangxi sci-tech innovation pilot zone (Guilin) plan, Guilin is poised to become an AI technology transfer hub for ASEAN, blending its natural charm with technological prowess.
