Huzhou in East China's Zhejiang province saw a year-on-year decrease of 4.31 percent in household waste in 2020, the second year in a row that it reported a decline.

This year, the city aims to slash household waste by another one percent, local authorities said.

To achieve this target, non-degradable disposable plastic straws and disposable plastic tableware will be prohibited in the city's catering industry, while disposable goods will not be provided by star-rated hotels and green hotels.

In addition, express delivery outlets shall also be banned from using non-degradable plastic bags and disposable plastic woven bags on a trial run basis, while support will be put in place to foster six enterprises producing alternative products.

The city plans to enhance its capacity to treat kitchen waste and increase the utilization rate of recyclables. It aims to recycle over 53 percent of renewable resources in its urban area as well as more than 70 percent of construction waste.

As the first city in Zhejiang to pilot smart waste classification, Huzhou will continue to propel the construction of a digitalized garbage sorting supervision platform.

The local government has set the goal of constructing an additional 90 provincial model residential communities and 16 provincial model villages in that regard.

Huzhou was recently ranked first among cities in Zhejiang in a provincial assessment for the promotion of household garbage sorting in 2020.

It was the third consecutive year for Huzhou to be rated as an "excellent city" in terms of garbage sorting in the province. In 2019, the city also topped all cities in Zhejiang in the provincial assessment.
