The total retail sales of consumer goods in Huzhou, East China's Zhejiang province from January to April were valued at 47.43 billion yuan ($7.3 billion), official data from the Huzhou municipal bureau of commerce show.

The figure represents a year-on-year increase of 27.3 percent over the four-month period. The city's growth rate in this area had topped Zhejiang for eight months in a row.

The retail sales of consumer goods by enterprises above designated size stood at 18.807 billion yuan, an increase of 45.1 percent year-on-year, a higher increase than any other city in Zhejiang.

During the four-month period, the sales of clothing, cosmetics, daily necessities, as well as gold, silver, and jewellery increased significantly, with year-on-year increases of 15.5 percent, 112.4 percent, 91.3 percent, and 26.6 percent respectively.

The 94 key enterprises under monitoring achieved combined sales of 37.484 billion yuan, up 115.9 percent year-on-year.

Over the same period, online retail sales in the city amounted to 23.11 billion yuan, up 43.3 percent year-on-year, the fourth highest growth rate in the province, while online spending was valued at 13.46 billion yuan, growing 34.1 percent year-on-year.

The strong results are primarily attributed to a string of measures implemented by local authorities to facilitate consumption in the city. Its Changxing county also won provincial recognition for spurring consumption growth.
