Huzhou in East China's Zhejiang province has built greenways with a total length of 47 kilometers this year, accounting for 94 percent of the target set by the city for this year.

To date, the city has a total of 943 kilometers of greenways, according to official data from the Huzhou municipal construction bureau.

Such greenways are built to promote the inter-connection among local scenic spots and parks.

In addition to greenway construction, the local government has taken a series of measures to strengthen environmental protection.

In the first half of this year, Huzhou's household garbage decreased by 3.1 percent year-on-year compared with 2019. This is in part due to the launch of a digital platform monitoring the city's food waste and the "empty your plate" campaign.

Over the six-month period, the city also completed upgrades on five sewage treatment plants in urban areas.

A total of 189 residential communities in the central urban areas were banned from the direct discharge of sewage, accounting for 60 percent of the city's total.

Huzhou also initiated the upgrading or renovation of 143 sewage treatment facilities in rural areas.

Meanwhile, the city has strengthened the treatment of flying dust. A total of 3,587 inspections have been carried on construction projects across the city. Fines of more than 5 million yuan ($769,230.7) have been issued so far this year for the violation of related air pollution regulations.
