Huzhou's Singles' Day online retail sales hit 4.2b yuan

Online retail sales in Huzhou, East China's Zhejiang province reached 4.2 billion yuan ($646.15 million) during this year's Singles' Day shopping spree, rising by 14.4 percent year-on-year, data from the Huzhou municipal bureau of commerce shows.

Boosted by the shopping extravaganza, the city handled 82.459 million parcels in the past month, up 30.3 percent year-on-year. 

The three most popular categories of goods sold from Huzhou were maternal and infant products, home furnishing products, as well as clothing, making up 56.3 percent, 16.9 percent, and 8.1 percent of the city's total Singles' Day sales.

The sales of Anji Baiyu white tea during the shopping festival amounted to 5.5 million yuan, up 6.6 percent year-on-year.

The flagship store run by Tubao, an interior decoration material brand headquartered in Huzhou's Deqing county, on Tmall reported its accumulated sales rose 15 percent year-on-year to about 15 million yuan during this period.

Wuxing district continues to lead the city with its online retail sales accounting for 68.1 percent of the city's total.

Several brick-and-mortal stores from Huzhou tapped the online shopping spree to boost sales.

Zhejiangbei Mansion's shopping center held livestreams to promote goods, which garnered 115,000 viewers and more than 3 million yuan in sales.

The Singles' Day shopping festival was first initiated by Alibaba on Nov 11, 2009. It has since become one of the world's largest annual online shopping events.
