Huzhou was recently ranked first in a provincial evaluation for "waste-free" construction in Zhejiang province, according to local media reports.

The ranking was made based on the waste-free index unveiled by Zhejiang on Nov 24.

The index, which is the first of its kind in China, is an indicator measuring a city's performance in the "waste-free" city construction campaign launched by the province from a variety of perspectives, including the utilization rate of industrial solid waste and per capita domestic garbage production volume.

Huzhou topped Zhejiang in the appraisal, followed by Hangzhou and Shaoxing.

A "waste-free" city is an advanced urban management concept aimed at minimizing the production of solid waste, as well as improving the recycling and safe disposal of waste in the city.

Huzhou aims to become a "waste-free" city by the end of 2023.

Zhejiang has vowed that all prefecture-level cities, as well as half of all the counties and county-level cities in the province will become "waste-free cities" by the end of 2023.
