Cancer still the most fatal illness in Huzhou, report says

More than 81 percent of deaths reported in Huzhou in East China's Zhejiang province in 2021 occurred because of chronic diseases.

Cancer was the top cause of death.

In the past year, an average of 39 people was diagnosed with malignant tumors every day in the city, and roughly 15 people died from the illnesses daily, according to the annual report on chronic diseases recently released by local health authorities. 

The top five fatal illnesses in Huzhou are lung cancer, thyroid cancer, intestinal cancer, gastric cancer and prostatic cancer.

The incidence of malignant tumors in the city has been increasing in the past 10 years. According to statistics, the incidence rate increases rapidly in those aged 45 and above.

Experts at local disease control and prevention center noted that one third of cancers can be prevented as long as people lead a healthy lifestyle and go for regular health check-ups.

According to the World Health Organization, there are many factors that affect human health, among which lifestyle is the most important determinant.

It is widely believed that a healthy lifestyle, which includes a reasonable diet, moderate exercise, psychological balance and no smoking and drinking, can prevent and control chronic diseases.
