Huzhou in East China's Zhejiang province proposed the establishment of the Lu Yu Tea Culture Promotion Foundation at a tea-themed cultural salon held in Beijing, capital of China, on May 15.

The proposal was jointly made by Huzhou and the China International Culture Association.

The proposed foundation is named after Lu Yu, who compiled The Classic of Tea, which is said to be the first monograph of tea culture in the world, in Huzhou during the Tang Dynasty (618-907).

In 2022, China's traditional tea-processing techniques and associated social practices were added to UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Among them are the processing techniques of Zisun tea, which was hailed as the best tea in China by Lu Yu in The Classic of Tea, and Anji White tea from Huzhou.

The salon, a global event sponsored by China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism as part of celebrations for International Tea Day, which falls on May 21, was held to "give tea a greater role in enhancing friendly dialogue and mutual learning between civilizations" and raise awareness of Chinese tea culture around the world.
