Changxing Baiyelong dance, a unique dragon dance popular in Huzhou's Changxing county, will be showcased during the pre-opening activities of the Hangzhou Asian Games on Sept 23.

Over 50 dedicated dancers, who have been tirelessly rehearsing, will perform the mesmerizing dance.

The name Baiyelong, which translates to "a dragon made of a hundred lotus leaves", originates from a fascinating local legend that tells the story of a dragon born in a lotus pond.

Traditionally performed by a team of 17 individuals during temple fairs or festivals, the dance holds great cultural significance as it symbolizes the hopes and wishes of the people for a fruitful year, both personally and for their homeland.

Acknowledging its cultural importance, Baiyelong was recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage item in 2005.
