Location and climate 

Guangyuan city is located at the intersection of Micang Mountain, Longmen Mountain and the low mountainous area in the northern Sichuan Basin. In the north, the area is elevated, while in the south it is hilly with lower altitudes. The highest mountain peak has an elevation of 3,837 meters. It has a subtropical humid monsoon climate with an annual rainfall of 800-1,000 mm, annual sunshine of 1,300-1,400 hours, and an annual average temperature of about 17 degrees Celsius. 

Land resources

The city possesses 347,527.35 hectares (521,2910.25 mu) of arable land, 17,415.61 hectares of garden land, 1,057,475.13 hectares of forest land, 4,816.5 hectares of grassland, 53,518.27 hectares of urban, rural as well as industrial and mining land, 18,688.79 hectares of transportation land, and 52156.41 hectares of water area and water conservancy facilities, as well as 80,272.47 hectares of land for other purposes.

Mineral resources 

About 37 kinds of mineral resources have been identified in the area, including coal, oil shale, native bitumen, monohydrallite, placer gold, limestone, graphite, iron pyrite and mineral water.

The reserves of god are 56,446.92 kilograms, and the coal resources are 301.212 million tons. 

Water resource

There are more than 120,000 water conservancy projects in Guangyuan city, including seven medium-sized and 753 small reservoirs. 

The total water resources are 7.96 billion cubic meters, of which 898 million cu m are groundwater. There are many rivers in the city with rich hydropower potential, creating theoretical reserves of 2.96 million kilowatts and a technologically exploitable volume of 2.326 million kilowatts.

Hydropower facilities with a total installed capacity of 2.222 million kilowatts have been completed and put into production. For example, the installed capacity of the Tingzikou Hydropower Station is 1.1 million kilowatts, and the Baozhusi Hydropower Station can generate 700,000 kilowatts. In addition, the Chaotian Bamiaogou hydropower project has started construction and is expected to join the grid in 2022.

Wind energy resources

The city's theoretical reserves of wind energy are 2.6 million kilowatts with a technologically exploitable capacity of 2 million kilowatts. Wind power devices with a total installed capacity of 419,200 kilowatts have been completed and put into operation and supplied 402,000 kilowatts of power for projects under construction.

During the "14th Five-Year Plan" period (2021-25), the city plans to reserve wind power projects with a total installed capacity of 1 million kilowatts, and will strive to achieve the goal of a million kilowatt wind power base.

Forest resources 

Guangyuan city is a national forest city and a national garden city. The city’s forest coverage rate is 57.22 percent, and it has 14 million mu (9.33 million hectares) of forest land and a forest stock volume of 59.39 million cubic meters. Its living trees stock volume has reached 63.08 million cubic meters, and retained forest land retention is 15.08 million mu in size.

The city has 13 nature reserves including Micang Mountain and Tianzhao Mountain, 10 forest parks including Jianmen Pass and Cangxi, and two national wetland parks, Nanhe River in Lizhou and Bailin Lake in Zhaohua. The Guangyuan walnut base has a total area of two million mu and a total output of 200,000 tons, while the olive base has a total area of 163,000 mu with a total output of more than 5,000 tons.

Wildlife resources

The city is rich in animal and plant resources. There are 104 species of terrestrial wildlife under key protection at or above the provincial level, including 13 species of national first-level protected wild animals such as giant pandas, golden monkeys, and takins, and 66 species of national second-level protected wild animals such as macaca thibetanas, ailurus fulgens, and blood pheasants. 

There are 35 species of terrestrial wild plants under key protection at or above the provincial level, including nine species of national first-level protected wild plants such as Taxus chinensis, Davidia involucrata, and Ginkgo, and 24 species of national second-level protected wild plants. 

Cultural and tourism resources 

Guangyuan has a history of more than 2,300 years, dating back to 316 BC when emperor Huiwen of the Qin Dynasty established Jiameng county. Guangyuan combines the ancient plank road culture of the pre-Qin period (c.2100-221 BC) with the Chinese Shu Path culture. It is the core corridor of the history and culture of the Three Kingdoms (220-280) and the birthplace of Empress Wu Zetian, an outstanding female politician in Chinese history. It was also one of the core areas in Chinese history, having been the capital of the Sichuan-Shaanxi Soviet Area, a main battlefield and the point of departure for the Long March of the Fourth Front Army of the Red Army.

Guangyuan boasts rich cultural and tourism resources. Guangyuan has two world-class tourism resources including Jianmen Shu Path and Tangjiahe, 162 national-level cultural and tourism resources and brands, and 201 provincial-level cultural and tourism resources and brands.

It has eight national cultural relics protection units, four national intangible cultural heritage items, one national historical and cultural town, three national scenic spots, two national nature reserves, three national forest parks, one national geological park, two national wetland parks, one national water conservancy scenic spot, and five national red tourism scenic spots.

The city has 47 national A-level tourist attractions, including one at the national 5A-level and 21 at the 4A-level, and one national-level and six provincial-level eco-tourism demonstration zones. There are six provincial-level tourist resorts, one county for national leisure agriculture and rural tourism demonstration and one demonstration site.

It has developed more than 300 products such as Maliu embroidery, Baihua stone carvings and Jianmen walking sticks, and cultivated 26 national geographical indication products such as red kiwi fruit and Micang Mountain tea. It is also known for specialties such as Jianmen tofu, steamed cold noodles, and Chaotian walnut cake.
