Yang Qing, a PhD graduate from the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry of Chinese Academy of Sciences, had already made his mark in Shanghai with a successful research team and market achievements in chemical medicine. However, in 2021, a visit to Hefei's Pilot Institute of Functional Molecules introduced him to a new frontier: synthetic biology.
Anhui province's Grand Union of Innovation (GUi) aims to transform cutting-edge research into tangible products that drive development. Recognizing this opportunity, Yang teamed up with three partners to establish Hechen Biotech. Within just six months, the startup secured two rounds of funding from Huaige Capital, Hongbo Capital, positioning itself as one of pioneers in bio-manufacturing ergothioneine, a process that drastically cuts production costs.

Yang Qing attributes much of his success to the supportive environment in GUi, citing strong policy backing, efficient services, and practical platforms for technology commercialization. His transition from a Shanghai-based entrepreneur to a key player in Hefei's burgeoning tech scene reflects the growing appeal of GUi.
The appeal is evident in numbers, with 1,520 new tech companies having settled in the area by mid-2024. The place has quickly become a magnet for tech talent and innovation, becoming a new epicenter for entrepreneurial dreams and technological breakthroughs in China.
