Shanghai Port registers robust growth in container throughput for two consecutive months
Shanghai Port has continued to demonstrate remarkable performance in container throughput, with April and May seeing significant increases year-on-year. In April, the port handled 4.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), a 7.7-percent increase, while May saw a more substantial 10.2-percent rise, reaching 4.65 million TEUs.
Against the backdrop of a complex global trade landscape, Shanghai Port's throughput remained resilient. The port's efficiency was further highlighted by a notable decrease in both average berthing wait times and operational durations during May's unexpected surge in container ship arrivals.
This achievement can be attributed to Shanghai Port's ongoing investments in lean management and smart port technologies, including optimized workflows and advanced data analytics. These initiatives have significantly enhanced operational efficiency, ensuring seamless handling of cargo, even during peak periods.

Collaborative efforts from maritime, customs, and border inspection authorities have also been instrumental in maintaining the port's high efficiency. Their continuous improvements in procedures and services have provided robust support for Shanghai Port's ability to navigate global trade challenges effectively.
