Wu Xiangdong was born in 1975 in Dongyang, the home of wood carving in China. He lost his hearing at age 2.

Wu started to learn the craft when he was 17 and is now very good at it, winning a provincial craftsmanship competition last July.

According to his wife, Wu would photograph every piece of fine wood carving he saw and study the craftsmanship in it. There are quite a few boxes of such photos in his home.

Wu now works at a famous local furniture company.

"I want to make fine art," Wu wrote on a piece of paper, saying that he will continue to polish his skills in the future.
