The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) announced on Dec 17 that the 2025 AUX Ningbo Open has received the WTA 500 Progress Award of the Year.
This marks the first time since its 2023 debut that the event has earned such international recognition, underscoring Ningbo's ambition to become a global sports city.
The honor reflects sweeping upgrades at the Ningbo (Yinzhou) Tennis Center, completed in just eight months. Its centerpiece is a camellia‑inspired retractable roof, with 12 "petals" that open or close in 10 minutes to adapt to weather.
In addition, a new 1,200‑seat grandstand, upgraded seating, lighting, and sound systems, plus world‑class player and media facilities, elevated the venue to international standards. Precision electronic line‑calling and enhanced medical and catering services further ensured fairness and comfort.
From Oct 11 to 19, the tournament welcomed 68 players from 27 countries, including four top‑10 singles stars and four Grand Slam champions. Elena Rybakina captured her 10th career title by defeating Ekaterina Alexandrova, while Liudmila Samsonova and Nicole Melichar-Martinez won the doubles crown. Attendance exceeded 29,000, a record high.
In addition to the competition, cultural activities immersed athletes in Ningbo's culture, from Yongju Opera at Qing'an Guild Hall to traditional dyeing in Zoumatang village.
In just three years, the Ningbo Open has risen from WTA 250 to WTA 500 and now to global acclaim — an inspiring leap that cements its place on the Asia‑Pacific tennis calendar.
