New Guinness World Record set in Shaoxing

A new Guinness World Record was set in Shaoxing, Zhejiang province, on Dec 22, when a mobile robot achieved the most consecutive badminton counter hits, according to Guinness World Records.

The record was achieved by Zhejiang Shenchen Kaidong Technology Co Ltd, whose robot completed 1,452 consecutive counter hits during the challenge. The attempt took place in Shangyu district and featured rallies against former women's singles world champion Lu Lan and Zhu Si, the women's singles champion of the 14th Shangyu Games.

During the challenge, the robot demonstrated stable and continuous performance under high-intensity play. Using a high-speed visual tracking system, it rapidly identified the shuttlecock's trajectory, while autonomous motion control algorithms completed path planning within milliseconds. A high-dynamic mobility system enabled quick lateral movement, sudden stops and directional changes, and a precision striking system ensured accurate returns to designated areas.

Organizers said badminton was chosen for the attempt because of its fast pace and highly variable landing points, which place demanding requirements on a robot's visual recognition, real-time computing and motion control capabilities.

The record-setting robot integrates multiple core technologies, including high-speed vision tracking, autonomous motion control, dynamic movement systems and precision striking modules. These allow it to recognize, predict and respond to shuttlecock movement in real time, completing movement, swing and return actions within milliseconds.

The developers said the project goes beyond entertainment or record-setting. By using badminton as a complex, high-difficulty testing environment, the robot's sensing, decision-making and execution capabilities in dynamic conditions can be validated, providing key data to support future advances in intelligent robotics.
