The Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport's annual passenger throughput has surpassed 50 million for the first time, joining the ranks of the world's busiest airports.
Together with Pudong Airport, Shanghai's two major airports handled over 1.35 billion passengers in 2025, an 8.3 percent increase over last year.
Flight operations in Shanghai saw a strong increase, with 839,000 flights taking off and landing, marking a 4.5 percent year-on-year rise. Cargo and mail throughput also set a new record, reaching 4.5 million metric tons, up 7.9 percent year-on-year.
Safety continues to be a top priority, with Pudong Airport celebrating 26 years of safe operations and Hongqiao Airport marking 38 years.
Last year, to further enhance its status as a global aviation hub, Shanghai introduced a new transit service, making it a preferred stopover for global travelers.
It also arranged for young, multilingual volunteers to assist international travelers and enhanced travel services by integrating a variety of hotel options into the airport experience.
Shanghai's record-breaking year in 2025 underscores its growing influence in the global aviation industry, setting new standards for passenger and cargo handling while improving the overall travel experience.
