The Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, located at Xiangzhou Bay, Zhuhai, enjoys a beautiful natural scenery and tranquility. Adjacent to Macao and close to the bay and international airport, it has a convenient transportation network.
Founded in June 2001 by the former Zhuhai medical center, the hospital now covers 220,000 square meters, with a floor area of 140,000 square meters. It has a European style outpatient building, an inpatient building, a medical technology building, an oncotherapy center, and an infectious disease center with 200 sickbeds which opened in October 2014. It has a sound infrastructure and internationally advanced large medical equipment such as dual-source computer tomography, 3.0 T nuclear magnetic resonance, digital subtraction angiography and an extracorporeal circulation machine representing a total equipment investment of more than 300 million yuan ($45.1 million).
The hospital has 1892 employees, 242 at the senior level. Eight are qualified doctoral supervisors and 52 are master's supervisors. Many of them have made great accomplishments in their area – two are Chinese Medical Association Specialty Society committee members and two are provincial medical association specialty society committee members. More than 290 are provincial deputy committee members, standing committee members and normal committee members; and 17 are city level medical association specialty society committee members. Another 21 serve as deputy committee members.
Three people are included in the Guangdong Education Department's Thousand-Hundred-Ten Project which is a measure in Guangdong Province to develop professional talents. In addition, one professor is selected as a supported national traditional Chinese medicine practitioner and three are supported in that field at the provincial level.
The hospital has an essentially complete clinic specialty complex and many specialties are highly competitive in the region. It is composed of 47 departments, of which 36 are for in-house clinical treatment, eight are for specific medical techniques, and three are for outpatient and emergency treatment.
It has 1,376 sickbeds, and processes 700,000 outpatient visits per year. A total of 35,700 patients are discharged annually.
The hospital is a clinic education base, conferring first class doctoral degrees in two subjects and second class degrees in four subjects. It also confers a first class master's degree in four subjects and a second class degree in 23 subjects. A Sun Yat-sen University post-doctoral studies center is also stationed in the hospital.
The hospital has three Ministry of Health specialty training bases – respiration medicine, surgery and general surgery; five provincial general medicine training bases in internal medicine, gynaecology and obstetrics, medical imaging, anesthesiology and dermatology; a provincial clinic training base for general medicine; and a provincial training base for hematodialysis which also provides training of the province's sterilization and supply center.
The hospital undertakes several scientific programs at national, provincial and city levels. It owns a laboratory, providing a sound platform for scientific research. It provided research funds for 384 programs of ten kinds from 2002 to 2014, of which seven were national level and 42 provincial level. It gained a first prize, two second prizes and five third prizes at the Zhuhai science and technology progress awards and won a third prize for science and technology development in Guangdong Province.
The medical staff have issued some 2,550 papers, 152 of which have been included in the SCI system, and have participated in ten academic monographs or textbooks.
The hospital has four provincial clinical key specialties – general surgery, oncology, infectious disease, and nephrology; two city level key medical specialties – oncology and pneumology; and two city level clinical key specialties – cardiovascular medicine and traditional Chinese medicine.
The hospital is developing wide cooperation and exchanges across China and the world and has provided health care service to both Chinese and foreign patients. It is an appointed hospital of medical insurance for people in Zhongshan, Jiangmen, Shenzhen of Guangdong Province and people in Qiqihar City of Heilongjiang Province. It has also signed treatment and aid agreements with a dozen international medical rescue companies. Over the years, it has provided treatment for more than 10,000 people from overseas, 3,000 as inpatients.
