The Zhuhai Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital, also known as the Zhuhai Hospital for Women and Children, is a Class-A level maternal and child care center that concentrates on healthcare but also integrates medical care, research, education, preventative medicine, and rehabilitation.

Founded in 1954, the hospital was part of Guangdong Province’s first batch of UNICEF/WHO Baby-Friendly Hospitals in 1993. In 1997, it was designated a Class-A level maternal and child health care hospital, the first of its kind in Guangdong Province, and the third in the country to qualify for this title.

The hospital occupies an area of 26,554 square meters, with a floor area of 50,986 square meters. It has 524 beds available and handles one million outpatient visits and 8,000 childbirths annually, generating annual revenues totaling 500 million yuan ($74.97 million). It has 1,180 employees, including 1,066 medical professionals, among whom 178 hold senior qualifications and 107 hold a PhD or master’s degree.

The hospital has advanced medical equipment. The total value of apparatuses worth more than 10,000 yuan ($1,499) each comes to a total of 170 million yuan ($25.49 million), including a CT scanner, a NMR scanner, nine four-dimensional ultrasound machines, a mammography machine using X-ray emissions from molybdenum and palladium, automatic karyotype analysis systems and micro-operating systems for intracytoplasmic sperm injection, which can meet the needs to diagnosis and treatment of common, critical, life-threatening, or complicated illnesses found in women and children.

The hospital has 23 clinical departments, 10 healthcare departments, and six medical laboratories, including about 50 secondary specialties, as well as 20 administrative departments. In addition, it owns six medical centers and two medical research institutes.

The hospital was one of China’s first to be approved by the National Health and Family Planning Commission to carry out an in vitro fertilization program, which saw a stable success rate of around 60 percent in recent years. Its obstetrics department handles more than 50 percent of childbirths in Zhuhai’s urban area, while its neonatology department handles more than 60 percent of Zhuhai’s total treatments for newborns, helping the city maintain an infant mortality rate that is considered low for both China and the rest of the world.

The hospital has been awarded five national honors, including the title of an “Advanced Organization in the National Health System,” seven provincial-level honors, and 35 city-level honors.
