Qi'ao Islanders pay homage in their own special way to the Dragon Boat Festival on June 7 and show their role in this weekend's China Cultural & Natural Heritage Day.

A unique folk activity on QI'ao Island, the event took root in the 13th reining year of Emperor Tao Kuang (Daoguang) of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). Villagers have been praying for good weather for crops and safety ever since winning the Anti-British Intrusion Battle in 1833. It was designated a city-level intangible cultural heritage in 2013.

Tangjiawan Tea Refreshments inheritor Liang Xirong will teach how to make Luodou Zong (a special leaf-wrapped glutinous rice dumpling stuffed with salted egg yolk and pork) and then his students will compete for a first prize of 500 yuan ($72.4), two second prizes of 300 yuan ($43.4); and three third prizes of 100 yuan ($14.5).

The Zhuhai Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone (Tangjiawan) Cultural Center will put on the event under the auspices of its Social Security & Public Undertakings Bureau.
