As a man lay bleeding profusely in the street, Zhao Ping vividly demonstrated on June 24 why China Southern Airlines flight attendants are trained in emergency first aid.

The young lady and a friend were driving by a traffic accident about 10 km (6 miles) north of Zhuhai (Jinwan) Airport when she suddenly stopped the car. Her job as an airline hostess (flight attendant) requires medical training and refreshers every two years. Drawing up that, she left the vehicle and rushed to treat the injured.

A school bus had collided at 6 pm with a motorcycle at the traffic light for Yuanzhen and Anji roads in Sanzao Town of Jinwan District. While no one aboard the bus was hurt, the motorcycle operator was thrown to the ground, getting a gash from eyebrow to the top of his head and was bleeding severely. His pregnant wife and son aged about 5 had been his passengers and were said to be in great distress.

Zhao instructed the crying wife to lower her husband's head while she applied first-aid. Zhao's friend, meanwhile, summoned others to call the hospital and police.

The injured man, although conscious, was at risk from excessive bleeding. A towel provided by a passerby was held by Zhao upon the head wound as she also pressed the superficial temporal artery to limit bleeding.

When an ambulance arrived 10 minutes later, Zhao briefed the medics. The bandaged victim was transported to Zhuhai Golden Bay Center Hospital. Zhao and her friend waited at the accident scene to report to the traffic police who arrived shortly afterwards. When all was done, they left upon receiving permission from the police.

The motorcyclist sustained severe trauma and an optic nerve injury. He was transferred to Zhuhai People's (Renmin) Hospital for further treatment.
