China's first corona virus-response hospital with permanent structure was ready on March 10 to serve Zhuhai, Macao, Zhongshan, and Jiangmen patients diagnosed with infectious or intractable diseases.

With floorage of 15,600 sq m (3.85 acres), the new branch of the 5th Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University is located at the foot of Fenghuang Mt. It consists of a two-story building, associated liquid oxygen and sewage treatment stations, and an air compressor room.

The treatment facility has 160 nursing wards, 300 patient beds, two operating rooms, intensive care units (ICU), clinical and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) labs, and computerized tomography (CT) machines.

The hospital branch will receive patients with corona virus disease (COVID-19) for now, and be retained for the treatment of possible future epidemics. All wards feature negative-pressure ventilation systems to prevent harmful pathogens from leaking out. Clean, semi-clean, and polluted areas and separation of medical staff and patient passages are also in place.

Fenghuang Mt Branch behind the 5th Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University 

Unlike other prefabricated makeshift hospitals, the Fenghuang Mt Branch has a reinforced concrete structure that is resistant to water leaks and typhoons that occur in coastal areas, as well as a 4.5-m (15-ft) story height and spacious interior.

The construction period was cut from 278 to 25 days thanks to optimized deployment of resources by the contractor and round-the-clock work by 12,000 employees, according to the Zhuhai Housing & Urban-Rural Planning & Construction Bureau.

In addition to the new branch, a parking lot is being built between the Medical Technology and Administrative Office buildings of the hospital at 52 East Meihua Road in Xiangzhou District. It will be able to accommodate 1,500 vehicles on 73,789 sq m (18 acres) upon completion.

Construction of the lot's four underground floors has been completed and work in those areas has shifted to interior finishing. One of three aboveground floors has reached that same stage, said Yang Zhihu, deputy head of the hospital's Infrastructure Construction Division.
