Hurdles overcome to finish Terminal II basement early

Updated: 2021-05-07

The basement of the Terminal II main building of Zhuhai (Jinwan) Airport was enclosed two months in advance of schedule during the May Day holiday. The new terminal is to be completed by 2023.

In addition to the threat of seawater encroachment, high requirements were imposed on hoisting height, dust, noise, and lighting in order not to affect the operation of Terminal I west of the construction site. Tang Liang, manager of the airport renovation and expansion project from the China Construction 2nd Engineering Bureau, said these were great challenges at the coastal site.

With floorage of 187,000 sqm (46 acres), the seabird-shaped Terminal II comprises a main building and east, west, and south airside concourses. Upon completion it will increase the airport's capacity to 27.5 million passengers per year.

Zhuhai (Jinwan) Airport opened in 1995 with a designed capacity of 12 million passengers annually. Its single terminal serves only domestic and regional flights within China. Volume exceeded 10 million in November 2018 and recently reached 11.22 million.

Renovation and expansion commenced in 2019 to meet the surging demands coming with the accelerated construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
