The 11th China Embroidery Culture and Arts Festival will open in Suzhou, Jiangsu province on April 18, according to local media.

As an annual cultural extravaganza in Suzhou New District, this year’s event aims to promote Su embroidery, one of the oldest embroidery techniques with a history dating back over 2,500 years. The festival will promote the traditional craft on the world stage over a two-week period.

One of the most-anticipated exhibitions at the festival will be the display of 71 pieces of precious embroidery produced during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1636-1912) dynasties, 90 percent of which are national treasures returned from overseas.

Famous designers from Hong Kong, Denmark and Switzerland will gather at the festival to discuss how to innovate using the traditional craft, and further boost the industry.

In addition, artists from China, the Czech Republic, France and the United States will work together on new embroidery creations that blend eastern and western elements.
