Hohhot aims high for synthetic biology industry
By 2027, Hohhot aims to introduce and incubate over 100 synthetic biology enterprises, striving to surpass an industrial output value of 50 billion yuan ($6.91 billion). By 2030, the city seeks to become a national leader in the synthetic biology sector.
These ambitious goals appear in Hohhot's recently issued Implementation Plan on Supporting the High-Quality Development of the Synthetic Biology Industry.
The plan details that Hohhot will establish a nationwide collaborative industrial model where research and development are concentrated in eastern China, while large-scale production is based in Hohhot. The city will promote the integration of synthetic biology with next-generation information technology and green agricultural processing industries, and establish key projects such as the bio-manufacturing valley and the synthetic biology AI computing center.
The plan outlines a comprehensive support system based on resource assurance, service support, and enterprise cultivation, fostering the rapid growth of the synthetic biology industry from multiple dimensions.
The plan highlights measures to enhance industrial infrastructure by utilizing Hohhot's steam and green power supply advantages. Hohhot will offer substantial subsidies for enterprises with annual computing service procurement exceeding 1 million yuan, attracting synthetic biology companies from across China to establish operations in the city.
The city also pledges support for open-access synthetic biology pilot platforms through operational subsidies, streamlining approval processes for new projects, and enhancing public services with multi-department coordination.
Further initiatives include assisting enterprises in scaling up and going public, implementing a biotechnology breakthrough program, and attracting top-tier talent in synthetic biology to drive corporate expansion.
