Three free trade zones (FTZ) in Xiamen, Fuzhou and Pingtan are expected to be established in March this year, and a research institute on the Fujian FTZ is expected to be set up prior to March, revealed Mr. Hong Yongmiao, dean of The School of Economics, Xiamen University.

The research institute is expected to get financial support from enterprises in Fujian Province and become a think-tank for the Fujian FTZ development.

On January 4th, Xiamen University submitted plans for the research institute. In November last year, The School of Economics, Xiamen University launched preparations for talent training and policy research for FTZ development.

The university has integrated its dominant subjects such as economy, management, law and Taiwan-oriented subjects.

The research institute will initially focus on four research subjects including trade simplification, financial creativity, investment management and Renminbi internationalization.

"The FTZ is of great significance to Fujian, as it will strengthen its attractiveness to Taiwan. More investment from Taiwan will be realized and the FTZ will serve as a springboard for Fujian’s enterprises to go global,” said Yuan Jianliang, chief of the Fujian branch of the China Development Bank.

Figures showed that from Jan to Nov 2014, a total of 389 Taiwan-funded enterprises settled in Fujian Province for the first time, an increase of 75 percent year on year.
