Xiamen came eighth in a list of top 100 best performing Chinese cities in e-commerce in 2015.

The list was published according to a research report by Ali Research, a think tank connected to Alibaba.

The 2015 China City E-commerce Development Index was compiled by Ali Research by using the enormous data collected on Alibaba's e-commerce platforms.

E-commerce has become a transforming force in Xiamen's economic development and urban construction in recent years.

As of the end of last year, 26,000 Xiamen-based companies had e-commerce included in their business scope. China's major e-commerce player JD.com located its regional logistics center in the Tong'an district, while Google's AdWords experience center was launched in Xiamen in January to help e-commerce companies adjust to overseas markets.

Transactions made through e-commerce platforms reached 140 billion yuan in Xiamen in the first half of 2016, up 27 percent from the same period last year. Cross-border e-commerce trade reached 60 billion yuan during the period, up 20 percent from last year. This was partly thanks to the city's continued efforts to reform customs inspection and clearance procedures.
