Xiamen's consumer market booms during May Day holiday

Xiamen welcomed a total of 3.32 million tourists during the May Day holiday, which is a 58.79 percent increase year-on-year.

The Xiamen municipal bureau of commerce organized the "2023 Xiamen Shopping Festival" to capitalize on the holiday consumption peak. A total of 88 themed events stimulated consumption and new stores, exhibitions and brand promotions opened on an unprecedented scale.

During the holiday, the combined total sales revenue of eight major department stores in the city increased nearly 8 percent year-on-year. The data reveals accelerated customer flow, consumption recovery and a thriving market.

At Xiamen Paragon Shopping Mall, there was a coffee roasting market that attracted many young people to enjoy the romantic summer nights. On the first day of the holiday, the shopping mall's foot traffic increased by 105.5 percent compared to the same period last year, and reached a two-year peak.

The SM City Plaza in Xiamen offered a wide range of activities, such as new store openings, trendy exhibitions and brand discounts during the May Day holiday. On May 1 alone, nearly 240,000 people visited the plaza, and a cumulative total of 860,000 people visited the plaza from April 29 to May 2.

Xiamen also launched a food festival during the holiday that focused on Fujian cuisine and collaborated with food delivery applications and banks to hold promotional activities. Data shows a 22.27 percent year-on-year increase in total sales revenue for nine key monitored food and beverage companies.
