A group of 25 college students from the US travelled to Suzhou, Jiangsu province on July 14 to learn about one of China’s greatest cultural treasures: Suzhou embroidery.

The students spent the day at a local embroidery training school, where they learned the subtle art of Suzhou embroidery from Lu Fuying, an artist who has dedicated herself to the art form for decades.

Master Lu introduced the foreign youngsters to the history and development of the art form, as well as a variety of exquisite embroidery works. Some were designed with typical ancient Chinese elements, while others integrated modern styles.

Most striking of all were the designs by Master Lu, which vividly depicted famous figures including former Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping and Mahathir Mohamad, the former Malaysian prime minister.
