Suzhou Song brocade originated in Suzhou city during the Song Dynasty (960-1279). It is admired for its lustrous colors, delicate patterns and soft texture, and honored as one of China’s “three most famous brocades” together with Nanjing brocade and Sichuan brocade.

It was included on the first list of national intangible cultural heritages in 2015. The Suzhou Silk Museum protects and promotes Song brocade; Qian Xiaoping is the only inheritor at the national level. The brocade was also listed as World Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 2009.

At an APEC evening party held in Beijing in 2014 all the participating leaders and their spouses wore clothes made of Song brocade produced in Suzhou.
