The first phase of Xushuguan ancient town in Suzhou New District has been completed and will open to the public soon.

The first phase covers an area of 10,000 square meters and includes an ancient architectural complex from the Republic of China period (1912-1949) with straw mat, silkworm breeding, and mulberry growing exhibitions.

It has also attracted new businesses such as fancy restaurants, luxury hotels, and high-end health care centers.

In addition, the second phase recently started construction, covering an area of 65,000 square meters. With an investment of 1 billion yuan ($160 million), it will be built into a "Jiangnan Culture" brand focusing on cultural catering, tourism, and leisure.

The Xushuguan ancient town project has received an investment of 16.4 billion yuan, covering an area of 226.67 hectares, including six themed areas along the Grand Canal.

The project is aimed at preserving Grand Canal culture by protecting and restoring historical sites using Suzhou's architectural style, as well as Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911) styles.

Other cultural sites in the ancient town are expected to start construction by the end of 2021.

After construction is finished, the town is expected to receive 5 million tourists every year.
