Li Changming, dean of the School of Materials Science and Engineering of Suzhou University of Science and Technology, was recently conferred the "2021 Suzhou Honorary Citizen" title by the local government.
Born in Sichuan province, Southwest China, Professor Li arrived in Suzhou for the first time in the 1970s and was impressed by the city's water town image.
Li left China for the United States in 1978 and returned in 2012 before settling in Suzhou three years later to perform research into new materials and devices.
"Suzhou is an ideal place to do research and it provides researchers like me with strong support for the development of high and new technology," Li said.
Li added that Suzhou has offered his team a favorable environment to advance their research in new energy and biochips which can be applied in areas such as medical diagnosis and artificial intelligence.
In Li's eyes, Suzhou is a city that integrates profound culture with modern prosperity.
"The development of a city is related to its historical accumulation, friendly people, and scientific public governance," Li said.
"I am confident that Suzhou, with its strong humanistic spirit, will maintain its openness and inclusiveness and continue to attract talents from across the globe."
