Wu Yu, 33, is an urban patroller working at the Dongzhu sub-district in Suzhou New District. As a veteran, Wu has been actively building up his body and taking health examinations since 2016, waiting to someday donate his stem cells to save lives.

Wu agreed without hesitation when he was asked by the local Red Cross society last October whether he was willing to donate his hematopoietic stem cells, which were a preliminary match for a patient.

"I'm a veteran and a Party member. I knew in my heart that I should always serve the people," Wu said.

Wu consoled his parents about the safety of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. He was also encouraged by his wife and colleagues for his selflessness.

On Feb 18, Wu was hospitalized in preparation for the medical procedure, which would take place five days later on Feb 23.

"I was successfully hospitalized and hoped that everything would go on smoothly over the next five days," Wu said on his WeChat moments. "Though I'm now not able to fight COVID-19 with my colleagues, I hope the epidemic will end as soon as possible. Good luck, Suzhou!"

"I was grateful to the Red Cross society for giving me the opportunity to help others and give back to society. This is what I've always been waiting for," Wu said after the operation.
