An exhibition entitled "Overseas Friends of Suzhou Classical Gardens" recently opened at the Keyuan Garden to highlight the role Suzhou classical gardens have played in promoting Chinese culture overseas over the past few decades.

Since 1980, more than 50 Suzhou-style classical gardens have been built in foreign countries. Many of them have received international recognition, including being named the Garden of Flowing Fragrance, Lansu Chinese Garden, and the Chinese Scholar's Garden in the United States, Dr Sun Yat-sen Classical Chinese Garden in Canada, Suzhou-style Bonsai Garden in Singapore, and Jingyuan Garden in Malta.

In addition, through a series of international symposia, online lectures, international cultural exchange weeks, and photographic exhibitions, Suzhou has shown Jiangnan (literally meaning south of the Yangtze River) culture to the world with its classical gardens serving as a bridge for exchanges.

Outstanding projects on the preservation and construction of Suzhou classical gardens have been recognized with global awards, such as the Keyuan Garden Restoration Project winning the Award of Distinction at the 2019 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation.
