The 14th Meeting of the Conference of the Contracting Parties to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands concluded on Nov 13.
Three draft resolutions proposed by China, including on Enhancing the Conservation and Management of Small Wetlands on the basis of Suzhou's (Changshu) experience, were approved, marking the first time since the accession of the country to the Ramsar Convention in 1992 that its draft resolutions have been passed.
In addition, Suzhou's experience of small and micro wetlands conservation was introduced to the world. After Kunshan Tianfu National Wetland Park was selected as one of the "100+ Global Biodiversity Positive Practices and Actions Around the World", Suzhou has again offered a Chinese solution to global wetlands conservation.
Changshu started citywide construction of small and micro wetlands from 2014 and has formulated a sustainable development model that integrates agricultural production, rural life and ecological protection.
By now, the area of wetlands in Changshu amounts to 29,921 hectares, with the protection rate of natural wetlands reaching 65.3 percent. The city has established three ecological circles centering on the Yangtze River, Yushan and Shanghu wetlands, and Shajiabang, Nanhu and Kunchenghu wetlands, respectively, with the total area exceeding 400 square kilometers.
