Established in 1964, the School of English Language, Literature and Culture (formerly the English department) offers undergraduate education and graduate education, and has seven departments.

The school’s undergraduate education includes an English major (English education, cultural communication) and a business English major (international cultural trade) for students. The school has been approved as the national first-class major construction point of “Double 10,000 project”, characteristic major of the Ministry of Education. It was evaluated as the excellent level in the evaluation of English major and ranked first in Beijing’s undergraduate major.

English is a foreign language major with the longest history in teaching and research at the Beijing International Studies University (BISU). It is a national first-class major as well as a leading major with comprehensive strength in Beijing’s universities and colleges. English is aimed at training high-level foreign language talents.

Business English is a new major of the School of English Language, Literature and Culture approved by the Ministry of Education in 2010 in order to meet society’s increasing need for high-quality talents. The major integrates English skill training with professional business knowledge to train comprehensive business English talents with creative spirit and international vision.

The University English teaching services focuses on training students’ international communication ability in academic or professional fields and enhancing their cross-cultural communication. It tries to cultivate talents with humanistic spirit, critical thinking skills, ability to understand and interpret Chinese culture, patriotism and international visions.

The teaching makes it a responsibility to serve the public with good reputation and social influence and teaching for higher education.

The school sends students to the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, France, Denmark and other countries for study every year. It has carried out various communication and study programs with world famous universities such as the University of California, San Diego; the Northern Arizona University; the University of Central Lancashire; and the University of Queensland and more.

Teachers of the School of English Language, Literature and Culture have been dedicated to training students’ comprehensive ability. In recent years, students of the school have won a number of national and provincial awards in various competitions.

In terms of graduate students’ training, the school has been authorized to confer Master’s degrees in English language and literature, translatology and foreign linguistics and applied linguistics. The school has set up professional cultural study centers such as the UNESCO Study Center, and the Center for Denmark Studies. Teachers of the school have been carrying out more than 100 National Social Science Foundation Projects, provincial and ministerial level fund projects and other entrusted projects.

The faculty of the school are young and enterprising and good at teaching and scientific researches. It has more than 120 full-time teachers, including 15 professors, 48 associate professors and 55 teachers with doctoral degrees.
