Students from Hengchangdianxiang Primary School in Hohhot, in Inner Mongolia autonomous region, took matters literally into their own hands when it came to celebrating the upcoming Summer Solstice on June 19.
They got busy making and painting fans for the festivities.
Summer Solstice, the 10th solar term of the year, falls on June 21 this year. At this time, much of the northern hemisphere receives the most hours of daylight, but it does not bring the hottest temperatures which will come 20 to 30 days later.
During the class, students painted Peking Opera masks on fans and wrote the characters for the Summer Solstice in Chinese on the fans.
The integration of Peking Opera and folk customs to celebrate Summer Solstice helped students learn the charms of traditional Chinese culture.
