Hohhot's ecological governance achieves results
Thousands of migratory birds have made Hailiu Reservoir their temporary home in Tumd Left Banner, Hohhot city, signaling significant improvements in the local ecosystem.
To date, Tumd Left Banner has invested 44.28 million yuan ($6.13 million) in ecological restoration. This initiative has effectively reduced major pollutants in the Xiaohei River upstream, resulting in improved water quality in the reservoir. The area now teems with lush aquatic vegetation and thriving fish and shrimp populations, making it an ideal rest stop for migratory birds.
Along the banks of the Qigetai Budong River, a fleet of drones monitors bird activity around the clock, while injured wildlife receive professional care at the Saihan District Wildlife Rescue Station.
Hohhot's forest coverage has risen to 15.78 percent, with a comprehensive grassland vegetation coverage rate of 46.15 percent and a wetland protection rate of 35.2 percent, safeguarding vital habitats for migratory birds.
To combat desertification, Hohhot has restored 570,000 mu (38,000 hectares) of land and accumulated 71 million metric tons of carbon storage in forest, grassland, and wetland ecosystems.
By 2024, the city had completed the sixth phase of the "Three-North" Shelterbelt Project six years ahead of schedule, continuing to enhance the quality of water sources that supply urban drinking water.
