A reporter visited a chain supermarket in Saihan district on May 25 and found shelves stacked with zongzi gift boxes priced at different levels. Traditional flavors, such as red date and sweet red bean, remain the most popular, while innovative options like barbecued pork, chestnut pork, and rose black tea have also garnered attention. Shoppers were seen coming and going in a steady stream.
At another store specializing in zongzi, a staff member shared that alongside the classics, many creative new flavors are gaining popularity, "For instance, Mongolian milk skin zongzi and mutton zongzi are particularly favored by young customers."
Making zongzi at home is also a cherished tradition for many during the festival. At Baoquan Farmers' Market, Ms Wu selected ingredients like bamboo leaves, glutinous rice, and red dates. "I make zongzi every year. It adds to the festive atmosphere and sense of family reunion," she said.
In addition to traditional foods, many young people have embraced new ways to celebrate the holiday, such as shopping online for mugwort, calamus, and scented sachets. Florists also offer decorative mugwort bouquets paired with calamus, gourds, and scented pouches, combining tradition with aesthetic appeal.
