Hohhot achieves historic 'double breakthrough' in corn yield per unit
In 2025, the Hohhot Agricultural and Animal Husbandry Technology Promotion Center established a large-scale yield enhancement project area for major grain and oil crops in the Tumd Left Banner National Modern Industrial Park, with a corn demonstration zone covering 1,500 mu (100 hectares), which focuses on 10 key technologies, including the selection of dense-tolerant corn varieties.
The center invited experts from the Institute of Crop Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (ICS-CAAS) and other organizations to conduct on-site yield measurements in the corn demonstration zone. According to the experts' measurements, the average yield per mu in the 100-mu (6.67 hectares) core field reached 1,256.35 kilograms, while in the 1,000-mu core field, it reached 1,120.87 kg, both of which are new records for Hohhot.
Technical personnel from the center provided guidance and services, effectively mitigating the adverse effects of frequent heavy rainfall, prolonged low temperatures, and insufficient sunlight. Hohhot has focused on agricultural technology breakthroughs, attracting top talent, building innovative service platforms, and implementing wise policies. The promotion center officially signed a technical service agreement with Li Shaokun's team from ICS-CAAS, introducing nationally-leading corn cultivation theories and technological achievements into Hohhot's production.

Li's team developed a systematic solution for increasing local grain and oil yields, tailored to Hohhot's natural conditions. This record-breaking yield is an example of how the skills and knowledge of high-end talent are transformed into practical results under the "institute-local cooperation" model. The project area introduced new corn varieties with strong durability and high-yield potential, making use of an innovative technology system centered on "the precise regulation of dense planting and high-yield”.
The core of this technology system is "precision", which optimizes each step through scientific data and expert wisdom to achieve efficient resource use and yield improvement. Hohhot also cultivated local agricultural technicians, enabling them to gain knowledge and enhance practical skills through collaboration with experts from CAAS.
