Hohhot ranks among China's top 100 cities
The China Urban Social Development Index Research project team recently released the New Era China Urban Social Development Index Top 100 List (2025). Hohhot ranked 33rd nationwide with an A rating.

From 2021 to 2024, Hohhot's GDP rose from 317.78 billion yuan ($45.51 billion) to 410.71 billion yuan, with an average annual growth rate of 6.4 percent. From January to November 2025, the added value of industries above a designated size in Hohhot increased by 6.2 percent year-on-year. In the same period, the city's total retail sales of consumer goods reached 113.07 billion yuan. From January to October 2025, the operating income of the city's service sector above the designated size was reported at 118.44 billion yuan.
The city currently has a total of 1,009 parks and gardens. From January to November 2025, its proportion of days with good air quality reached 90.4 percent.
Since the beginning of the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25), 1,534 old residential communities have been renovated and 240 streets and alleys have been improved. In 2025, five counties in Hohhot established closely-knit county-level medical communities. The average number of drug varieties in community health service centers has increased to over 800, with 883 family-doctor teams.
During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, 104 primary schools, secondary schools and kindergartens were newly built, renovated or expanded. Six renowned schools from Beijing, including the affiliated high schools of Minzu University of China and Peking University, were established in Hohhot, and 12 new cooperative schools were added through partnerships with universities in the city.
