Local residents used to call the scenic spot the "monkey gazing over Taiping" and since then Taiping county – now where the Huangshan district located – is at the foot of Huangshan Mountain.
The Stone Monkey Gazing over the Sea of Clouds is a strange rock formation in the area. Standing alone on top of the peak, it does seem to be watching the clouds.
It's a fantastic outlook that has presided for thousands of years.
As the region has changed so dramatically over the countless centuries, the only thing that remains unchanged is the monkeys' watchfulness for Taiping and the local residents' beautiful vision of "world peace" – which is fact what "Taiping" means in English.
