The Huangshan Scenic Area – situated in Huangshan city in East China's Anhui province – has reached a noteworthy milestone by becoming the first zero-carbon mountainous scenic area in China.

The recognition was conferred during the 24th CBRN Member Conference, which marked the 50th anniversary of China's participation in the Man and the Biosphere Programme and the 30th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese Biosphere Reserves Network.

The goal of establishing the zero-carbon scenic area is to balance the carbon footprint within the region and promote a green, low-carbon lifestyle.

In recent years, while ensuring the ecological safety of the area, the Huangshan Scenic Area has implemented various measures to achieve a period during which greenhouse gas emissions within it are lower than the removal capacity.

These measures include implementing a low-carbon management system, utilizing renewable energy, applying low-carbon emission reduction technologies and creating incentives to guide tourists towards green and low-carbon behavior.

All of these efforts are said to have not only resulted in a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions but also established the scenic area as a leader in promoting a low-carbon lifestyle – setting a benchmark for the green and low-carbon tourism industry.
