In the recent 2023 National County-level Tourism High-quality Development Exchange Conference, Huangshan city – located in East China's Anhui province – emerged as a standout.

It figured extremely well in the 2023 China County-level Tourism Competitiveness Report released during the conference, which concluded on Nov 26.

Huangshan's Yixian and Shexian counties, as well as Tunxi district, scored prestigious positions on the list of the top 100 counties and districts for tourism competitiveness in the nation.

The success of these three regions was widely seen as underscoring Anhui's prominence in the national tourism landscape.

Yixian county enjoys a long recorded history dating back to the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC). It is a treasure trove of 1,690 well-preserved ancient buildings from the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. Home to UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites Xidi and Hongcun ancient villages, the county is by repute a testament to China's traditional culture and architectural marvels.

Likewise, Shexian county, renowned for its profound cultural heritage – including inkstones and three carving crafts: brick carving, stone carving and wood carving – is another living testament to the Huizhou civilization, the ancient name of Huangshan city.

Tunxi district is the central urban area of Huangshan city, offering a blend of historical richness and modern amenities. Notable cultural heritage sites – including the Daizhen Memorial Hall and Tunxi Old Street – contribute to the district's status as a national-level historical and cultural protection zone.
