Huangshan embraces new era of low-mountain tourism

chinadaily.com.cn| Updated: August 14, 2024

Huangshan, renowned for its majestic peaks like Huangshan Mountain, Qiyun Mountain, and Guniujiang Mountain, has traditionally been celebrated for its mountainous attractions. However, Huangshan is now pioneering low-mountain tourism to align with modern travel trends and consumer preferences.

With 61 A-class tourist attractions, over 490 national and provincial traditional villages, and more than 4,700 ancient residences, Huangshan has an abundance of intangible cultural heritage and historical relics. Limiting tourism to a few well-known peaks would be a significant underutilization of these vast resources.

In recent years, Huangshan has leveraged its unique natural and cultural assets to promote low-mountain tourism, expanding the tourism market and attracting over 83 million visitors annually, generating more than 74 billion yuan ($10.22 billion) in revenue. This shift has led to a 45 percent increase in visitor numbers and a 58 percent rise in tourism income.

Xixinan village in Huizhou, located 30 kilometers from Huangshan Scenic Area, hosts regular events such as forest concerts, folk festivals, and creative markets, significantly boosting local tourism. This year, the village welcomed 600,000 visitors in 125 days, surpassing last year's total.

Huangshan's innovative approach to tourism development integrates high and low mountain attractions ensuring continued growth, providing visitors with enriching and memorable experiences.
